G3: Live in Concert (1997)

G3: Live in Concert is a live album by the G3 project, led by Joe Satriani.
It was released in 1997 by Epic Records. This lineup of G3 includes Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai. In 2005, a DVD of this concert was also released.
On G3 Live three of the most talented electric guitar players of all-time come together for a video that sizzles with creative synergy.
Out of the three pieces they play together, their version of RED HOUSE is awesome! The three blend and complement one another nicely, beginning with a classic blues opening and gradually building in intensity. the song is extended to include a solo by each of the three after each verse, and to close it out they trade eights- (one guitar plays a riff and the next one responds), finishing strong with a great ending. Hendrix would have been proud and probably impressed by this fine rendition. The only liability with their cover of RED HOUSE is Eric Johnson's drab singing, but then again- when you listen, you will be so amazed by the guitar work that Roseanne Barr could be singing, and it would still sound pretty darn good! But seriously, it is an awesome album, that gives an excellent taste of some of the best work of these three- check it out!

G3 Live: Rockin' In The Free World (2004)

In an essay on "The Guitar's Use in Pop Music," Frank Zappa once made reference to latter-day guitarists and their penchant for "clouds of educated gnat-notes." (He also referred to their "pathetic lick-spewage and freeze-dried stereotypifications.") The point he was hammering home like so many nails at a crucifixion was that pop/rock guitar playing/soloing had lost its character and no longer reflected the personality of the individual player. Form and feel had been sacrificed for blazing speed and spiritless riffage.
One must assume that G3 Live: Rockin' in the Free World -- from star guitarists Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Yngwie Malmsteen -- is, by and large, the kind of axemanship that Zappa was decrying: machine-like technicians lacking a sense of musical lyricism. While that appraisal does lend some valuable insight into this album, it would also be too harsh to apply it rigorously here. To begin with, this primarily instrumental two-disc set -- recorded at the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City on October 21, 2003 -- is entertaining. And there's no doubt that this trio of guitar slingers really can play -- it's just that they do so, particularly in terms of their soloing, within rather narrow stylistic parameters (for the most part).
Each guitarist performs his own set on the lengthy first disc, before they team up to perform three covers – Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" and "Little Wing," and Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World." Admittedly, the vehicles for the trio's virtuoso indulgences on this album range from hard rock to metal to classical, but are really just hooks to hang solos on. Sometimes the other instruments cut out altogether. Satriani's titanic boogie rocker "The Extremist" opens proceedings and sets the bar pretty high. He shows a lighter touch on "Always With Me, Always With You," and dips into his classical bag for "Midnight," before tearing things up again with the metal raver "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing." Vai offers up the loftier, organ-laced "You're Here," the lurching hard rock of "Reaping," and the slow and stately "Whispering a Prayer," which brings to mind the playing of Yes' Steve Howe and some of the work on Jeff Beck's solo albums. A nice stylistic departure.
Meanwhile, Malmsteen, renowned for his preternatural speed, shows just how fast those gnat-notes can be fired out on tracks like the perfectly titled "Blitzkrieg" and the classical "Trilogy Suite Op. 5: The First Movement." The Hendrix jams are disappointing and suicidal song choices to begin with, utterly damning the players on the matter of style through unavoidable comparison to the originals.
But "Rockin' in the Free World," which doesn't dilute the song itself, is a highlight and gives the set a certain passion that is lacking in other places. This is a showcase album from three guitarists with plenty of flash and flair, excellent technique, and just enough stylistic variety to keep the balloon in the air. Of course, regardless of what Frank Zappa might've had to say, speed-guitar freaks are gonna love this one.

Joe Satriani - Is There Love In Space (2004)

After the poorly received Engines Of Creation and Strange Beautiful Music, Satch returns to form with a vengeance with Is There Love In Space?

Like its predecessor, the record follows a more conventional rock direction but also retains the elements of quirkiness that peppered Joe's earlier works. In fact, while listening to this album, I couldn't help but feel that I'd heard much of the music before in Joe's back catalogue. But this was not a feeling of disappointment - more a sense of pleasure at how polished the overall album is. In every track the tone and rhythm guitars are absolutely spotmore… on, and Joe being Joe, only widdles when necessary (unlike Steve Vai who seems content to go off on endless tangents in his work).

Particular highlights include Up In Flames, with the chorus containing some of the heaviest riffing I've heard in a rock song, never mind a Satriani song. Lifestyle is one of the two vocal tracks, and I'm pleased to say that Satch has finally got it right this time. I've never been a fan of his vocal tracks but both on this album are excellent. The lyrics are nowhere near as bad as his earliest efforts and there's a great boogie feel on I Like The Rain. If I Could Fly is simply one of the most beautiful pieces of instrumental guitar music I have heard.

It's much like Flying In A Blue Dream, but even warmer thanks to the acoustic rhythm gutar and there's an adrenalin rush about the whole thing. Satch is so adept at doing 'rush' songs like these. Then you have The Souls Of Distortion, before an acoustic track, of which I'm not a fan. But overall the whole album is polished and superbly composed.

1. Gnaahh
2. Up In Flames

Joe Satriani - Crushing Days (2001) - A Tribute to Joe Satriani

Crushing Days: "A Tribute To Joe Satriani" pays tribute to the most successful and influential rock instrumentalist of all time. Joe Satriani first burst onto the scene nearly 15 years ago, landing a high profile gig with Rolling Stones vocalist Mick Jagger.

Since that time he has released eight albums and has been nominated for six Grammy awards. This tribute CD features the axe work of eleven independent artists, each interpreting a different Satriani composition.

From Carl Roa's jazzy cover of "Summer Song", to Mike Chlasciak's heavy interpretation of "Driving At Night", to Ron Thal's flute-heavy take on "Always With Me, Always With You", you'll get a true flavor of the great influence of Joe Satriani on the instrumental scene today.

Joe Satriani - Engines Of Creation Album (2000)

Joe Satriani has long been one of rock's most respected guitarists, but outside of his fellow axe-men, he's never really achieved much success--or respect. Engines Of Creation is another attempt by the guitar god to change all of that. Utilising a full palette of electronic effects and beats, Satriani lays a foundation over which he can showcase remarkable skill. Unfortunately, the result can't help but sound more than a little tacked-on.
Rather than a seamless blend of electronic music and guitar virtuosity, Engines Of Creation jumps back and forth between the two. A promising beat is interrupted… by a challenging riff, or a display of guitar wizardry is let down by weak backing, and the result falls far short of anything resembling a tune.
Man, that Joe Satriani can really play guitar. It's just too bad that he can't--or won't--play any songs qeqeqe

Joe Satriani - Crystal Planet Album (1998)

Like a previous reviewer said Satch's music doesn't need vocals to convey the emotion of the music across.
He does an awesome job of that with his catchy riffs and screaming solos.

Although Satch's level of mastery of his instrument is nothing short of amazing not all of his music is that great. This CD has best mix of rock and slower songs. I myself love all things rock so this CD sits better with me than some of his other work (included his newest Super Collosal).

If you are intested in getting into the world of Satch this is a great place to start. All the songs rock (especially my favorite : Love Thing!). Do yourself a favor and pick it upfor free here.

Joe Satriani - Time Machine Album (1993)

Satriani, in my opinion, is one of the finest guitarists around. He can compose some great tunes, from several different genres, and has a dazzling technique on his guitar which actually contributes itself to the melodies, rather than just sounding like guitar played really fast for the sake of it. It is definitely one of his better attributes in the fairly limited 'Guitar album' market.

The Time machine is a 2 CD set, which contains one CD of live performances of some of his more wll-known tunes, and the other containing new material. The live CD is brilliant. Well recorded, and diverse. The songs more… are not note-for-note repeats of the studio takes, and there is a lot more passion and expression in them. The new material CD also features some great stuff, much of which shows a more experimental side to Satriani's compositions. Not all the songs will appeal to everyone, whether they're fans of Satriani or not, but there are tunes here that are indicative of his style.

There's the obligatory 'surf' song, fast-paced up-tempo radio-friendly rock, some tasteful acoustic music, and some off-the wall compositions that make up a good variety of music for Satriani fans.It is, however not the easiest album to get into. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's never heard of Satriani, or who 'kind of' likes his stuff. If you're expecting loads of interesting and dazzling guitar work set to some cracking compositions, though, you could do a lot worse than this....

Joe Satriani - The Extremist Album (1992)

The Extremist lives up to its name, continuing Joe Satriani's tradition of exploring new musical and compositional ground.

A vastly different array of musicians assists him in creating the songs displayed on this all-instrumental disc, and as such the songs are different from even the usual envelope-pushing Satriani fare.

The chugging "ea8;Summer Song," the warm "Friends," the slamming "Motorcycle Driver," and the crunching "The Extremist" show Satriani's talents as a guitarist are undiminished, while the more traditional neo-folk approach to "Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness" and the bluesy "New Bluesmore…" are different from anything he has done before. So, too, is the droning rock of "War" and the plaintive, questioning funk-rock of "Why."

Track lists :

1. Friends
2. The Extremist/Interview
3. War
4. Cryin'
5. Rubina's Blue Sky Of Happiness
6. Summer Song/Interview
7. Tears In The Rain

Joe Satriani - Flying In A Blue Dream Album (1989)

I have heard all of Satch's albums and for me this is probably the greatest album he has ever done.

If you've heard 'Surfing with the alien', this album will be no different, but Satch has many more different, interesting songs here. Straight-ahead shred-rock ('Back to shalla-bal' and 'One big rush'), some funk ('Bells of lal part 2' and 'Strange'), a bit of folk/country ('The feeling' and 'Phone call') and a bit of 80s metal ('Big bad moon'). Don't worry, 'cause Satch still uses great guitaring and solos.

For me Satch is great at making amazing solos, but also making them more… very musical, and not just a load of notes thrown together. He is very talented at composing songs, as well as being a great guitarist. He also includes his famous double handed tapping tecnique in the beautiful 'Day at the beach' and the not-so-good 'Headless', and the complex 'hand-holding-the-neck and hammer-on' tecnique in the fantastic 'Mystical potato head groove thing'.

Track lists :

1. Flying In A Blue Dream
2. The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing
3. Can't Slow Down
4. Headless
5. Strange
6. I Believe/Interview
7. One Big Rush
8. Big Bad Moon/Interview
9. The Feeling/Interview
10. The Phone Call
11. Day At The Beach (New Rays From An Ancient Sun)
12. Back To Shalla-Bal
